Melatonin released at night is anti-catabolic and helps to protect you from your daily stress. When you don’t sleep this causes your cortisol levels to be high and in turn your insulin levels as well. This can lead to your body breaking down its own muscle proteins for fuel which reduces your muscle mass. Less muscle means you burn fewer calories and your metabolism slows down actually causing you to store fat. The body then responds by turning any extra calories into fat.
